Local Shanghai (10/15-23/2011)

Saturday, October 15, 2011
Back in the French Concession, we looked for the "food street" of Jinxian Lu which has several western restaurants. Chose the one with a line, Pier 39 which is "California-style." Fortunately a very short line. We were given a battered menu:
Had a mostly pureed and herb-y clam chowder (which they also serve in a bread bowl) and a smoked salmon sandwich on a nicely crusted baguette.
This restaurant on Fumin Lu had children's chairs for those waiting for a seat:
We thought we had heard about all the burger places:
We tried the milkshakes at this place on Changle Lu; the chocolate had a hazelnut taste and the vanilla was artificially sweet.
Hairy crabs are in season:

Took a stroll down Hengshan Lu. First the Hengshan Community Church, a multi-denominational Protestant church with services in English at 2:00 and 4:00 on Sunday afternoons.
"Stained glass" decorations on the exterior wall:
At first it looked like a tourist tram!
All the pews were lined up on the walkway while they polished the church floor.
The church building across the green:
Church windows:
The ivy-covered facade:
This church, in Gothic-style, was built in 1925.
Practically across the street is the Phebe 3D nightclub:
Upstairs is a bowling alley:
Uh, oh, the leaves are starting to fall!
I also tried to find a "secret garden" at Jiatong University, but due to construction, I could not find a way in.

Kent took today off. It had rained, but seemed to be clearing. We discovered we had forgotten the map we had printed of the area at the end of Metro Lines 8 & 10. We were going to try to find a way to commute to the BASF offices in the northern part of Pudong.
First stop, Huangxing Park:

Took a walk through Xujiahui Park. This is the park on the grounds of the former Ta Chung Rubber Factory and they left the chimney:
Artificial lake:
Looking back at the chimney:
Elevated walkway:
Trimmed hedges:
Some round stones lying around:
Roller bladers:
We walked to Camel Sports Bar for breakfast and to watch the World Series.

Later I photographed the correct Bai/White Mansion:
They were preparing for a wedding:
Walking back home, we discovered the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial:
A tower of 3,000 railroad spikes made by sculptor Gloria Connan in 1990:
This was presented by the Governor of Illinois in 1991 in commemoration of the workers who were a major factor in connecting the East and West Coasts of the United States.
A music CD vendor:
Note his makeshift sound system.
A yummy custard from Lillian Cake Shop:

Hi there! I am trying to track down some information for a patron on the sculpture made by Gloria Connan in Shanghai. Is your original digital file of the image good enough that you can read the inscription on the statue? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Although the resolution of the original photo is not good enough to read the inscription, I did take a photo of the English part. It says:
Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial
A most significant factor that connected the eastern and western coasts of the United States and united them into a nation was the contribution made by the Chinese railroad workers. This memorial tower of 3,000 railroad spikes commemorates their deeds and attests to the continuing friendship of the people of Illinois for the people of China.
Presented by the State of Illinois.
United States of America.
James R. Thompson. Governor
Gloria Connan. Sculptress
January 6. 1991
(The periods in place of commas is how the inscription was written.)
